Team skipper Rohit Sharma is most likely to participate in the press conference ahead of the first ODI against the Kiwis. Prior to the game, there are a couple of things that are of major concern to the Indian team. India has quite a few selection conundrums that are likely to bother Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.

Opener Shubman Gill is most likely to be dropped from the ODI team. In his place, Ishan Kishan is likely to get the nod ahead of the youngster. In the ODI series against SriLanka, Ishan Kishan was dropped despite scoring a double century against Bangladesh. On the contrary, Gill’s recent century against SriLanka at Trivandrum will make it difficult to drop in. In that case, Gill can take the NO.5 spot

Virat Kohli, the man currently in great form will slot in his usual No.3 spot. Kohli has managed 3 centuries in his last 4 innings and will likely keep his momentum high against the Kiwis. Shreyas Iyer will retain his spot at No.4 ahead of World No.1 in T20s, Suryakumar Yadav. SKY who featured in the last game, couldn’t showcase his might in the 50-over game.

Ishan Kishan will feature in the wicket-keeper role as KS Bharat will once again warm the bench. Vice-captain, Hardik Pandya will slot in at the No.6 role as both KL Rahul and Axar Patel miss out on the series owing to personal commitments. Washington Sundar will get his chance to shine. He will pair up with Kuldeep Yadav as the dual-spinner option.

The pace attack will be spearheaded by Mohammad Shami. He will be joined by the likes of Mohammed Siraj who scalped 4 wickets in the previous game. Young speedster Umran Malik is most likely to feature as the third pacer in the Indian lineup.

India Playing XI 1st ODI: What to expect from 1st ODI?

  • Team India has to take a call on the opener. Ishan and Shubman both have done well.
  • However, only one can play while the other may have to sit out.
  • Ishan being the wicketkeeper gets an automatic slot. But his batting role will depend on Shubman’s inclusion.
  • KS Bharat is the other keeper in the squad and can bat in the middle-order.
  • But it remains to be seen whether India hand him the debut, overlooking in-form Ishan Kishan.
  • In the middle-order, once again, India will have to take a call on SKY.
  • While SKY is an automatic choice in KL Rahul’s absence, India may look to accommodate Shubman Gill at No 5 instead of SKY.
  • In the bowling department, India will continue with Mohammed Siraj and Mohammad Shami and Umran Malik.
  • Shardul Thakur may have to wait a bit longer.
  • As for spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will once again fight for a spot.
  • In Axar Patel’s absence, Washington Sundar will look to grab the opportunity.
