Marcelo Bielsa ‘had agreed to coach Mexico but was rejected by a newly formed national team committee’… with the Argentine boss now Everton’s No. 1 target

Marcelo Bielsa was reportedly set to become the next manager of the Mexican national football team, only for a newly formed committee of club team owners to decide against it.

According to David Faitelson of ESPN, Bielsa agreed to step in as the first team boss of Mexico as part of their preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

However, the bosses of Mexican soccer clubs – with a committee consisting of the owners of Club America, Club Tijuana, Chivas Guadalajara, and Santos Laguna – rejected Bielsa in favor of Pachuca boss Guillermo Almada or former Mexico boss Miguel Herrera.

There was a tumultuous change in the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) when Grupo Pachuca – the owners of CF Pachuca and Club Leon – resigned from the Commission of the Mexican national teams over the appointment of Rodrigo Ares de Parga to Director of the National Team.

Grupo Pachuca was in favor of Bielsa, according to Faitelson, but the commission are in favor of Almada and Herrera.

Despite this, Faitelson says that Pachuca will let the 56-year-old, Uruguayan-born Almada go to coach the national team if that’s what he wishes.

With Bielsa out of the picture, front runners are Guillermo Almada (L) and Miguel Herrera (R)

Herrera was previously coach of Mexico during their run at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where El Tri lost in the Round of 16 to Holland.

He was let go as the boss of Mexico after an alleged altercation with a TV announcer at Philadelphia International Airport after the 2015 Gold Cup.

Since then, Herrera has bounced around Mexican clubs – stopping at Tijuana, America, and Tigres.

Reports from Faitelson say that Ares de Parga and current FMF Men’s team director Jaime Ordiales will begin interviewing candidates for the job of national team coach on Monday.

Bielsa spent time managing teams in Mexico at the beginning of his career, taking charge of both Atlas and América from 1993-1996.

After that, he returned to Argentina to run Velez Sarsfield, before jumping to RCD Espanyol in 1998 – taking the Argentine national team job later that year.

Bielsa has been out of coaching since being fired from Leeds United in February of 2022.

He’s most recently been linked to the managerial job at Everton – who recently sacked boss Frank Lampard.

Bielsa is Everton’s top target for the job but he may cost $13.6m per year to take up the post at Goodison Park.

Bielsa initially rejected the offer to lead the Merseyside team, but Everton are not giving up on their pursuit of the manager.
